Shanghai, CN, 2024
During my residency at E.SCAPE space in Shanghai, I presented a collective dinner as part of Around Publishing. The dinner, built around the humble gesture of gleaning, was connected to my childhood farming memories. It also reflected the act of gleaning in the city life like now, using materials I borrowed (or 'gleaned') through connections that I explore in Shanghai. It also drew from my experiences in the Netherlands, where people glean furniture from the streets. This approach to living serves as my critique of Shanghai's consumerism. The dinner began with the film Gleaning by Agnès Varda and ended with an envelope containing a menu and a handful of wildflower seeds, offering an instruction for later. Note: It is a place where neither publishing nor wildflowers are allowed to flourish.
